1. For the treatment of anemia 2. Hemolytic disease of the newborn
Fresh frozen plasma
Plasma separated and frozen in 8 hours of collection.
1. Used to control bleeding in coagulation factors deficiency
Cryoprecipitate
1. Prepared by thawing fresh frozen plasma at 1 to 6 °C; 2. The precipitates are collected and again refrozen. 3. Cryoprecipitate <25 mL contains fibrinogen 150 mg and 80 units of factor VIII.
1. Used in deficiency of fibrinogen, 2. Or deficiency of factor XIII, and in DIC.
Platelets concentrate
1. Platelets are separated from a single unit of blood. 2. Suspended in 40 to 60 mL of plasma 3. Stored at 20 to 24 °C
1. Indicated in thrombocytopenia due to any cause 2. Prevents bleeding in low platelets count
Granulocytes collected by apheresis
Granulocytes are collected by apheresis.
1. In neutropenia 2. Infection 3. It is more effective in infants than adults.
Platelets collected by apheresis
platelets collected by apheresis and volume is 200 to 300 mL
1. Used as platelets concentrate
What are Blood Components
Blood is often separated into Components such as Platelets, Fresh Frozen Plasma(FFB), Packed Red Cells (RBC), Cryoprecipitate and then given to patients what they need. The advantage is we make the use of blood donation to maximum benefit. Therefore, one unit(350/450m1) of blood collected from the donor will be given to at least 4 needy patients.
Packed red cells (PRC) : Human blood is one of the most important constituents of life which cannot be substituted with artificial materials. The use of whole blood is a frequently required measure in major surgeries and emergency care of trauma patients. Millions of lives are being saved every year with blood transfusion.
Random Donor Platelet Concentrate (RDP) : An adequate and reliable supply of safe blood can be ensured by a stable base of regular, voluntary, unpaid blood donors. Voluntary donors are the safest group of donors as the prevalence of blood-borne infections is lowest among this group.
Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) : generally indicated when a patient has multiple factor deficiencies and is bleeding, or for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). The PT and PTT will be prolonged, and the INR generally should be greater than 1.6.
Single Donor Platelet Concentrate (SDP) : generally indicated for a platelet count of less than 50,000/microliter and there is active bleeding, or if a procedure such as surgery is to be performed. Spontaneous bleeding is unlikely until the platelet count drops below 10,000 to 20,000/microliter.
Leuco Reduced Packed red Cell : generally indicated with a hemoglobin of 7 to 8 g/dL, a markedly decreased oxygen saturation and/or orthostatic hypotension. There is indication that the patient needs additional oxygen carrying capacity.
Cryoprecipitate : Prepared by thawing fresh frozen plasma at 1 to 6 °C, The precipitates are collected and again refrozen. Cryoprecipitate <25 mL contains fibrinogen 150 mg and 80 units of factor VIII.
Used in deficiency of fibrinogen, Or deficiency of factor XIII, and in DIC.
